Creating a SubText Skin

Since 10 Volt Media created the HTML and CSS for my new skin per my request and nothing else, I’m having to create a new SubText Skin from scratch.  Fear not, this won’t be too hard of a process.  Well, it turns out, it slightly is. Step 0.)  Have a local copy I do not suggest doing this on a live copy of your server.  Too much goes wrong too quickly.  Do not do this on a live server. Step 1.) XML Head into your Subtext.Web project then to the Admin folder to find Skins.Config.  This...

Reskinning progress

Progress after a day is pretty good.  I had to actually dive into the code a few times with SubText to fully understand how to do the skin properly as it wasn’t straight forward.  I’ll do a post but I think if you really want to do a skin, you’ll have to be able to understand ASP.Net at some level. Here is a localhost version of the skin after a few hours of hacking.  I still need to do the comment section and properly do the right navbar.  I have to tweak the header a bit too and get...

Upgrade time!

I upgraded my blog to Subtext 2.1.0.5 today along with upgrading my mail server 2 days ago.  I discovered a few interesting things in my failures. First thing is if you want to do something creative is to test before you attempt to deploy live.  I should have tested upgrading subtest to .Net 3.5 before just shoving it on my live server. Secondly is to merge your Skins.config with the new one if you have a custom skin.  The new skins.config has a mobile phone skin that you won’t want to live without. Next is to...

subtext 2.0 upgrade fail

My attempt to upgrade my blog engine from Subtext 1.9.5 to Subtext 2.0.1 failed tonight so there may have been a bit of triage as I attempted to roll back. Things I learned but forgot about doing deployments. copy all files to server in a different directory first copy current app directory on SERVER doesn’t hurt to have a local copy too verify you have done...

Excel 2007, best hidden feature ever

All I did was highlight the selected rows I wanted and I got a sum AND average.  Normally I'd do a summation (total amount) in a different column.  This just reduced the amount of work I've had to do for my monthly reports!

Aluminum framing is the way to go

After much Zen meditating (or as normal people say, drinking beer), I've decided aluminum framing is the way to go.  Cheap(ish), zero welding, 1 bar should be enough to do the entire structure and then some, connectors are there, connectors are there to reinforce too.  Mounting brackets for everything. Basically, it is perfect.  Now I get to buy a drill press and band saw for my apartment too.  Power tools, every man's weakness.

Hammers and nails are last year

So I'm attempting to figure out how to build the frame for the Skateboard segway and I think I made some serious headway. My dad (Bob Rutkas, even though he is an evil mac user), has informed me about Bosch aluminum framing and it is AWESOME.  All I need is a band saw and I'm set. On the flip side, I could go carbon fiber too.  Robot Market Place has some cool stuff that may be usable.  I'm not sure if I'm able to drill into it and construct it with lets say wing nuts.  That is the part...

Silverlight, too focused to be happy?

When you create a new Silverlight project, it creates a Page.html.js file that appends on a function to the window.onload to gain focus. NO, bad silverlight, you go in the corner, you get focus when I give you focus.  Jeff Atwood agrees too.

tonight I am defeated but tomorrow (or the next day) ... victory! ... i hope

Being a life long cubs fan, I've learned a few things about failure.  And tonight, I failed to have the relay boards pour more than 2 shots in a row.  Prototyping the bartender is seriously getting annoying. I'm not sure if I fried the relay boards I've been using for the past few months.  It is possible.  The timing seems off now too which makes me a bit more likely to believe this..  I need to see how much work it will take to mod one of the boards into a master board.  I may need to do a...

Rory Blyth - Video editing god?

So I had a little video editing mental break down.  So I sent Rory Blyth an email since he was once a Channel 9 member over at Microsoft and generally awesome guy.  While I didn't exactly say Windows Movie Maker sucks per say, I'm not going to disagree with that statement either.  However I will say after Dan Waters, another ADE on my team, showed me some tricks with WMM, it sucks far, far less.  My one HUGE problem is the lack of multiple audio tracks along with if you alter the time line, the audio doesn't shift with everything....
